Fitness to practise

When we say that someone is ‘fit to practise’ we mean that they have the skills, knowledge, character and health to practise their profession safely and effectively.

If a registered dentist or dental care professional fails to meet the standards set by the GDC we can:

  • restrict what they can do professionally
  • or remove them from the Register

This covers all dental care professionals whether they are working in the NHS or in private practice.

Examples of when a registrant’s fitness to practise may be in question may be due to:

  • health issues
  • conduct issues, including convictions and cautions, or
  • clinical performance issues.

We look carefully at every case. In some cases, we may simply offer advice rather than removing or restricting a dental professional's registration.
