Dental professionals

The GDC regulates just over 100,000 members of the dental team across the UK, including approximately 40,000 dentists and 60,000 dental care professionals (DCPs) - dental nurses, clinical dental technicians, dental hygienists, dental technicians, dental therapists, and orthodontic therapists.

  • Core purpose – Our primary purpose is to protect patient safety and maintain public confidence in dental services. To achieve this, we register qualified dental professionals, set standards of dental practice, investigate complaints about dental professionals' fitness to practise, and work to ensure the quality of dental education.
  • Continuing professional development (CPD)- we ensure that development and learning is embedded throughout a dental professional's career, by setting requirements for CPD as a condition of registration. This requirement for ongoing learning ensures the provision of high quality patient care and maintaining of professional standards. We emphasise that development be fluid and flexible, adapting to dental professionals' learning needs throughout their working life.
  • To assure the quality of education and training programmes in the UK that lead to GDC registration we undertake activities, such as inspections and monitoring. We do this so that we can be confident that approved programmes meet our Standards for Education and new registrants have met the required learning outcomes. We work with a panel of registrant and lay inspectors in these quality assurance activities.
